Specialist note

Jewel-like colors highlight the chimney, sky and fence of this rare pictorial sampler with a green linsey-woolsey ground, a material made with a linen warp and woolen weft. With precisely executed strawberry and Greek key borders, this work displays a remarkable level of refinement and accomplishment. The daughter of David Moses Hall (1777-1842) and Mindwell Beach (d. 1842) of Wallingford, Sina Hall most likely attended Union Academy, which was run by the Reverend Joshua Bradley from 1809 to 1818. She married Justus Preston (b. 1793) and they had six children (additional information provided by Carol and Stephen Huber).
