In Greek mythology, Hylas is a handsome youth, and a companion of Heracles during the expedition of the Argonauts. This scene depicts the moment where a Naiad, a nymph of fresh water streams, has become captivated by Hylas' beauty, and reaches out to drag him into a pool of water. The story appears in Theocritus 13.
