Specialist note

There is another, larger version of this subject matter by Gilman in the Ferens Art Gallery, Hull City Council. The Tate also holds a painting of Clarence Gardens, depicting the same picturesque tree form seen in this composition, by William Ratliffe. Ratliffe was a member of The Camden Town Group and exhibited with them. He was also a friend of Gilman's and was most probably inspired by the latter's painting. Unlike Ratliffe or the rest of the group of artists, Gilman is not as interested in the topography of north London and its buildings but rather more concerned with the sculptural and anthropomorphic qualities of the tree.
