Basilica di San Pietro Vaticano, or the Basilica of Saint Peter, is located within the State of the Vatican City in Rome, Italy.
The basilica is named after St. Peter, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus and according to tradition the first Bishop of Rome. In 324 A.D. Constantine commissioned a basilica to be built over St. Peter's tomb. That structure stood for more than 1000 years. Construction on the current basilica began in the 1500's and was completed in 1626.
The basilica showcases some of Italy's greatest art, including Michelangelo's Pietà and Bernini's Baldacchino, which rests over the papal altar.
St. Peter's Basilica is one of the largest religious structures ever built and can hold over 60,000 people. Today, it is a place of pilgrimage and is visited by millions of people.
