CASE: in the form of a garlanded and lidded vessel supported by two African figures, the sunburst pendulum below with draped surround, on an oval base with turned feet DIAL: white enamel with pierced and engraved gilt hands signed 'FERDINAND BERTHOUD' MOVEMENT: twin barrels with recoil anchor escapement, silk-suspension and calibrated countwheel strike to bell, the back plate signed 'Ferdinand Berthoud'; with sunburst pendulum

Specialist note

Ferdinand Berthoud (1727-1807) was one of the finest clockmakers of the 18th century. In 1766 he was appointed a member of the Royal Society of London and later a Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur.
