inscribed and dated 'Helgoland Sept 25 1849' and with signature 'F Liszt', with inscription 'Rudolf' (on fragment of the old backing, attached to the mount)

Specialist note

Perhaps a preparatory drawing for the more highly-finished portrait study, executed on the same day, which is in the British Museum (inv. 1906,0419.80). The final portrait was reproduced in H.C. Marillier, Men and Women of the Century, London, 1896, p. 44.
