Lot 1472 From the Collection of Mr. Soho Tokutomi
Mr. Soho Tokutomi (1863-1957) was a famous journalist very active between Meiji and Showa periods. At the age of 28, he founded "Kokumin (People's) Newspaper" and worked as a chief editor and Managing Director for many years. His reputation as a historian was well known, with the accomplishment of The Modern Japanese History Volume 1-100.
Mr. Tokutomi deeply appreciated Chinese culture as he was acquainted with Tang Dynasty Poem Selection and he was highly respected by policy-makers, business leaders and Chinese poem specialist Shinpei Goto.
He was able to form the major collection of important Chinese paintings with a help of the great circle of his friends such as the Chinese seal maker Senro Kawai, historian Konan Naito and graduates from University of Toa Doubunshoin.
Mr. Tokutomi and Qi Baishi were born in the same year thus Mr. Tokutomi had a special connection with Qi, hence they kept a good relationship for a long time and coincidentally they passed away in the same year. A calligraphic work by Emperor Qianlong from the same Collection will be sold in our Fine Chinese Classical Paintings and Calligraphy sale on 26 November 2012.
