This collection of four paintings comes from the family collection of Wang Yiting. In the forward to "Wang Yiting's Paintings and Calligraphy", Zhang Daqian described him as a man of great virtue, and a daring artist who created great works. Wang Yiting was also a great connoisseur of the arts and was an avid collector of Chinese paintings. These paintings have been passed down through the family.

According to Wang Zhen's great-grandson, Wang Xiaofang, portraits of Ji Gong were rare in Wang Zhen's oeuvre, and he was known to have only painted three paintings with Ji Gong as a subject matter - one painting now housed at the Palace Museum, Beijing, another went missing, and the last is this present piece.
