The bowl chased with cells below an ovolo border, on a spreading stepped foot, the baluster knop cast and chased with lions masks with foliage between on a matted ground and with grotesque capped scroll buttresses, the rim engraved with an inscription, the detachable cover chased with a foliage swag band and rosettes, with further grotesque buttresses and an acorn finial, applied with a coat-of-arms, marked near rim and on cover bezel, with stone base

22 oz. 7 dwt. (696 gr.)
The inscription reads 'To Master George Henry Lascelles from the National Association of Goldsmiths 1923'

The arms are those of Lascelles quartering other and with a label for difference for George Henry Lascelles, (1923-2011), later 7th Earl of Harewood.

Almost certainly a christening gift from The National Association of Goldsmiths to George Lascelles, 7th Earl of Harewood (1923-2011), when styled Viscount Lascelles, and by descent at Harewood House, Yorkshire.

Specialist note

The design of this cup is inspired by a Flemish cup in the collection of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. The Founders Cup, as it is known, was presented to the college by the Sir Walter Mildmay (d.1589), and is marked for Antwerp, 1541. Silver and goldsmiths working in the early years of the 20th century would have known of it from publications such as E. Alfred Jones The Old Plate of the Cambridge Colleges, Cambridge, 1910 pl. CV and C. J. Jackson The History of English Plate, London, 1911, p. 693.
