A GEORGE III SILVER TUREEN AND COVER
MARK OF JOHN WAKELIN AND WILLIAM TAYLOR, LONDON, 1776
Oval on spreading foot with gadrooned borders, applied with vacant circular medallions hung with husk swags, the cast twisted handles with ram's masks terminals, the slightly domed cover with foliage and scroll handle, marked under foot and on cover bezel, the foot and cover further numbered 'No 1', with a later ebonised wood plinth with applied silver band, engraved with an inscription
12 7/8 in. (32.8 cm.) wide over handles
the tureen and cover 60 oz. 11 dwt. (1,883 gr.)
The inscriptions on the base read 'The Derby Cup 1934' and 'Won by Lord Harewood's "Blank" 15th Nov. 1934'.

Possibly Lieut.-Col. F. H. L. Errington, formerly part of the collection of the Late Willoughby J. G. Loudon Esq.; Christie's, London, 12 May 1919, lot 66 (£87 to Harrods).

Specialist note

The Derby Cup, the main event on the third day of the 1934 Autumn meet at Derby, was run over a mile and three quarters with Blank, the horse entered by the 6th Earl of Harewood, winning by a head over Jean's Dream and Celestial City who finished five lengths further down the field.
