Hei tiki, mounted with a presentation plaque engraved 'To/His Royal Highness/The/Prince of Wales/From Residents of West Harbour/NZ/18-5-20', with fitted case
3¼ in. (8.5 cm.) high

A gift from the people of West Harbour, New Zealand, 18 May 1920, to H.R.H. Edward, Prince of Wales, later King Edward VIII and, after 1937, The Duke of Windsor, and presumably by gift to his sister, H.R.H. The Princess Mary, Princess Royal, Countess of Harewood (1897-1965) and by descent at Harewood House, Yorkshire.

Specialist note

Following the ancient traditions, the eyes of the tiki are made out of red wax.
West Harbour is suburb of Waitakere City located in the west of Auckland. The Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII) visited New Zealand in 1920 during a tour of the Empire.
