signed in Cyrillic, inscribed in Russian and dated 'The 9th evening, November 11/I. Repin/1866' (below the mount), inscribed 'N. I. Murashko' (below the mount); with further inscription and number 'No. 28. Dessin (camarade) 1866./trav. du prof. I.Y. Repine./Vera Repine, 1932./Stockholm.' (on the reverse)

Acquired by the present owner circa 1990.

Specialist note

The present portrait was executed during Murashko's time at the Russian Academy of Arts in St Petersburg. Sharing Ukrainian heritage with Repin, the two artists became close friends and Repin later supported Murashko's endeavours in founding the first art school in Kiev.
