MARK OF WALTER BRIND, LONDON, 1798, BRITANNIA STANDARD
On three paw-feet, the handles cast as coiled snakes, an arrow running down the centre with the arrowhead pointer, the chamber with husk band and of spring scissor-action, marked inside the chamber on both sides

Specialist note

The lack of any engraved coat-of-arms makes it difficult to know the full provenance of these snuffer-scissors, however, the use of Britannia standard silver leads to the suggestion that they may fit in with a group of silver made for Charles Thellusson M.P. (1770-1815). On the death of his father in 1797, Charles inherited £100,000, some of which he used to produce silver in the latest French fashion. The Thellusson family came to the greatest notice as the builders of Brodsworth Hall in Yorkshire.
