Specialist note

Another version of the present miniature, also painted in 1782 and formerly in the collection of John Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913) as a portrait of the Marquise de Montesson, is in the Nationalmuseum Stockholm. A similar work of the same year, possibly depicting the same sitter, is in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Caen (see A.-M. Passez, Antoine Vestier 1740-1824, Paris, 1989, p. 284, nos. 189 and 190, illustrated p. 285, figs. 189 and 190).
