The three boys in the miniature were children of James Stopford, 2nd Earl of Courtown and his wife Mary, née Powys. James George Stopford, 3rd Earl of Courtown served with the Coldstream Guards in the British Army and later went into politics as MP for Great Bedwyn. He also served as Treasure of the Household in Pitt's governement. He married, in 1791, Lady Mary, eldest daughter of Henry Scott, 3rd Duke of Buccleuch and 5th Duke of Queensberry. Sir Edward Stopford, G.C.B., K.T.S. died unmarried. Sir Robert Stopford, Rear-Admiral of England and Governor of Greenwich Hospital, married Mary, daughter of Robert Fanshawe.
