Archduchess Marie Karoline of Austria (1825-1915), in white dress and fur-lined blue coat, five strands of pearls, pearl brooch and pearl drop-earrings, upswept centre-parted hair
on ivory
oval, 3 5/8 in. (92 mm.) high, gilt-metal frame within rectangular leather travelling case

Archduke Rainer Ferdinand of Austria, the sitter's husband, in 1905 and 1907.
Dorotheum, Vienna, 6 June 1961, lot 215.

Note du spécialiste

Marie Karoline was the daughter of Archduke Charles, Duke of Teschen. She married, in 1852, her cousin Archduke Rainer Ferdinand of Austria (1827-1913) but had no issue.
According to Leisching and the 1905 exhibition catalogue (supra), the present miniature depicts the sitter as a bride, suggesting that it was painted in 1852.
