Possibly a gift by Sir Charles Hanbury Williams (1708- 1759) to the Russian Emperor in 1755 (according to a label on the reverse).
Hermitage, St. Petersburg, by 1870 (according to an old note accompanying the painting).

Specialist note

Sir Charles Hanbury Williams was appointed British ambassador to the Russian court and travelled to St. Petersburg in 1755. He introduced his protégé, the Polish noble Stanislaw Poniatowski, to the future Catherine the Great of Russia, starting their famous liason.
