A BLUE-LACED HARAMAKI ARMOUR
EDO PERIOD (17TH-18TH CENTURY)
The blue-laced haramaki [armour] with sixty-four plate iron suji-kabuto ridged [helmet], signed Joshu (no) ju Saotomi Ietoshi, russet peak the forecrest of kuwagata [stylized horns] and central gilt crest of the family mon known as iori-ni katabami [wood sorrel inside a hermitage], lacquered iron menpo [face mask] with substantial moustache,four-tiered shikoro [neck-guard] of shittsukezane [simulated scales], the do [cuirass] with hon-kozane [individual scales], seita [back section] also of hon-kozane with shittsuke-zane on the kusazuri [skirt] section, the whole kusazuri of shittsuke-zane [simulated scales], fine multi-splinted ko-shinogote [sleeves] also with gilt mon, the iyo haidate [thigh protector] signed in two gilt cartouches with the name of the armourer Iwai Yoshiyasu, sode [shoulder guards] of itazane [single plate simulating rows of scales] and same mon, all blue silk backing matching with gold-brocade mon of wood sorrel inside a hermitage, and wood sorrel within a circle [known as the 'Shonai' katabami], ko-shino suneate [shin protectors] each signed Myochin Ki (no) Munechika saku, with red-lacquered leather-clad armour box bearing the same mon in gold lacquer
