A Kyo-Sukashi Tsuba
Edo Period (late 17th-early 18th century)
The round iron plate is pierced with a design of twelve kiri [paulownia] crests in a circle, the ryo-hitsu are formed as two ginger buds (myoga), the kogai-hitsu is plugged in polished shakudo and the rim is made from the same material, there is some surface carving to the kiri blooms and the myoga

Specialist note

Kyo-sukashi tsuba of this type and style were not signed and they are now categorised by their place of manufacture rather than by whom they were made. The design demonstrates the strength and sophistication that is typical of works produced in Kyoto in the Genroku era (1688-1704).
