Bombé oval, on scroll and shell feet, with female herms applied at the joins with flowers and scrolls, the domed cover chased with vegetables, crustaceans, and rocaille, surmounted by an acanthus and vegetable finial, with an engraved coat-of-arms in a rococo carouche, marked underneath and on cover bezel

Specialist note

The arms are those of Leveson-Gower, for John, 1st Earl Gower (1694-1754). He served as Lord Privy Seal from 1742 to 1754, and was made one of the Lords Justices during the King's absence abroad. While George II was in Hanover, Gower raised a regiment in the King's name against the Jacobite uprising of 1745. In recognition he was elevated to the Peerage of Great Britain in 1746.
