Specialist note
'From our garden we look up the river to Chiswick Eyot, an island of willows, decorated at either end with a group of swans who are forever cleaning themselves, their long white necks turning and twisting ceaselessly. In the summer the island behind the willows is a jungle of hemlock and dank vedure. In the winter it is often flooded and the summer's growth lies bleached and flattened with driftwood.' (J. Trev elyan, Indigo Days: the Art and Memoirs of Julian Trevelyan, London, 1996, p. 51).
