GIOVANNI ANTONIO BATTARRA (1714-1789)
Fungorum agri ariminensis historia. Faenza: Typis Ballantianis, 1755. 4° (276 x 204mm). Half-title, engraved vignette on title, 40 engraved plates and an historiated woodcut initial. (Occasional marginal soiling not affecting plates.) Contemporary vellum (a few stains, leather label on spine lost). Provenance: W.C. Hope Vere (Craigie Hall book label).

RARE. A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION: no copies sold at auction in the past 25 years (ABPC/AE online). It is Battarra's major work and it describes over 300 types of mushrooms; the 40 plates were engraved by the author and in his honor a new type of mushroom discovered by Humphrey was named Battarea.
