A Dutch polychrome-painted and oak tilt-top table 'flap-aan-de-wand'
Hindeloopen, late 17th or first half 18th Century
The sixteen-sided plain top with balusters carved with female masks to the underside and decorated with scrolling foliage and flowers centred by a medallion depicting a biblical scene, supported by three splayed baluster-shaped and turned legs
64 cm. high x 88 cm. diam.

Specialist note

The 'flap-aan-de-wand' was an integral part of the Hindeloopen interior as early as the 17th Century. This three-legged table with a flap-top can be stored away against the wall in upright position, when not in use. The table top faces the wall, displaying the underside of the table, which is usually extensively decorated with acanthus scrolls and a central bibilical scene. The Zuiderzeemuseum in Enkhuizen owns various 'flap-aan-de-wand'-tables with comparable mask carvings and decoration.
