Specialist note
Rudolf Kaesbach was born in Monchengladbach, Germany in 1873. Moving from the Academies of Hanau and Brussels to study at Dusseldorf, he also worked in Paris and Berlin. The Studio described Kaesbach's oeuvre as follows, 'He does not make it his function to portray the sturdier, ruder types of humanity... but exercises his art in modeling... the smooth and graceful lineaments of the female form' (The Studio, vol. LXII, no. 25, 1914, pp. 161-166).
