Meiji Period (Late 19th century), signed Yoshizane koku
The rectangular box with rounded corners worked hirazogan and takazogan and incised details with a heron and the reflection of the moon in a lotus pond inlaid in silver, gold and shakudo, the moon indicated by silver inlay on one side of the box, the underside of the cover incised with a mouse and a lotus; the interior and rims gilt
3¼ x 4 3/8 x 1 5/8in. (8.3 x 11.1 x 4.1cm.)

Specialist note

This may be the work of Nakagawa Yoshizane (1859-1915), the second son of Shoami Katsuyoshi (1831-1908). He learned metalwork from Nakagawa Katsumi (1829-1876) and later from Kano Natsuo (1828-1898) at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts.
