A CHINESE FAMILLE ROSE ARMORIAL OCTAGONAL PLATE
QIANLONG PERIOD, CIRCA 1790
Decorated with an allegorical scene depicting Hope gazing out to sea beside her anchor beside the arms of Ker with Martin in pretence, within a border of cartouches depicting the four continents
9½ in. (24 cm.) wide

Sotheby's Monaco, 5 March 1989, lot 382.

Note du spécialiste

For the arms, see D. S. Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, London, 1974, p. 694. The scene depicts Hope gazing out to sea leaning on a shield bearing the coat-of-arms. The four cartouches at the border show the four known quarters of the globe: Europe, Asia, Africa, and America. A very similar plate from the Peter H. Frelinghuysen Jr. collection was sold in our New York rooms, 24 January 2012, lot 30.
