A CHINESE EUROPEAN-SUBJECT HELMET-SHAPED MILK JUG; AND A PAIR OF PLATES
QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-95)
The famille rose jug brightly enamelled with a couple seated beside a river, the lady holding a parasol and the gentleman pointing to a figure within an archway at the far bank, with moulded branch-form handle; and a pair of plates decorated with scattered flowers
The jug 6¼ in. (16 cm.) wide; the plates 9 in. (23.5 cm.) diam. (3)

The jug: The Hervoüet Collection, no. 455; Sotheby's Monaco, 22 June 1987, lot 1595.

Specialist note

The scene depicted on the jug is probably a version of the more common scene taken from Départ des pèlerins pour l'Ile de Cythère after an engraving of 1708 by Bernard Picart.
