James Isaiah Lewis (1860-1934)

While Kew Bridge was replaced in 1903, the pipe tower in the distance still stands as the centre piece to the Kew Bridge Steam Museum. The Kew Bridge pumping station - originally opened in 1838 due to poor water quality - was still running right up to 1958, and still houses the world's largest working beam engine which (at over 40ft high) was described by Charles Dickens as a 'monster'.

Oliver's Island was named after Oliver Cromwell, who was said to have escaped to the island from the nearby Bull's Head pub.
