SECOND PLACE OLYMPIC MEDAL, ATHENS 1896
copper medal designed by J.C.Chaplain (1839-1909), the obverse inscribed 'Olympia', the edge inscribed 'Bronze' and the reverse inscribed (in Greek) 'First International Olympic Games, Athens 1896' together with the original brown box lined with red fabric
2in. (5cm.) diam.

Gifted to Nikolaos Stavridis, the doctor to The Greek Royal Palace in 1896 and by descent to the present owner.

Specialist note

Along with a bronze medal, all second place athletes at the first modern Olympics were awarded a crown of laurel and a certificate. It is understood that this medal was intended to be awarded to the second place winners of the cancelled boat race.
