Specialist note

Born in Paris in 1822, Louis Sauvageau exhibited at the salon from 1848 to 1874. A versatile sculptor he produced works across the genres - mythological, allegorical, religious and animalier. The present pair of bronze groups are conceived in the spirit of the mid-18th century and are emblematic of water (or autumn) and fire (or winter) (P. Kjellberg, Les Bronzes du XIXe Siècle, Paris, 2005, p. 647).
