Specialist note

The fountain of Neptune was commissioned to celebrate the newly appointed Pope Pius IV, Giovanni Angelo di Medici. The architect, Tomasso Laureti, completed his work by 1565. Two years later Jean de Boulogne added the figure of Neptune, earning himself ever afterwards the nickname Gianbologna.
