Specialist note

Sir John was the second, only surviving son of Sir John Frederick, 4th Bt., by Susannah, daughter of Sir Roger Hudson of Sunbury, he married Mary, daughter of Richard Garth of Morden, Surrey on 15 October 1778. He was Lieutenant-Colonel of the Surrey militia and served as M.P. for Newport (1174-1780), Christchurch (1781-1790) and Surrey (1794-1807).

Lady Holland, who met him in the course of his militia duties, described him in 1799 as a mild, gentlemanlike man; 'he has the manners of a man of the world, pleasant conversation, and a fair portion of information'. He died 16 Jan. 1825.
