Of baluster form, the body and cover with spiral cabled fluting, the shaped circular foot decorated with scrolls, vines, and foliage, the handles finely modeled as Bacchic figures, one as a faun with grapes and a pan flute, the other a female with a tambourine, upon scrolling volute supports with shell, and mask joins, the cover with undulating rim, with seated putto finial with grapes, the body engraved with a Royal Duke's badge on one side and monogram CR beneath a Royal crown on the other, the cover rim engraved with scratch weight 97=18, fully marked on cover bezel and on body

Specialist note

The monogram is that of Queen Charlotte Sophia of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1744-1818), wife of George III, whom she married in 1761. The Royal Duke's badge is for one of her sons, the Duke of York, Clarence (later William IV), Kent, Sussex, Cambridge, or Cumberland.
