ALEXANDER WRITES TO BENNIGSEN, who was probably active in the conspiracy that led to the assassination of Paul I, Alexander's father. Bennigsen had been opposed to Paul's policies and in 1801, following Paul's death, was appointed Governor General of Lithuania. Bennigsen had participated in the suppression of the Polish uprising in 1793, and the Russian invasion of Persia in 1796; at the Battle of Leipzig he led one of the columns that made the most decisive attacks, for which Alexander made him a Count.
