Charles Vacher was a prolific painter of landscape and topographical subjects, championed by Ruskin. This example was one of several made during extensive tours of Algeria and Egypt.
Dendera is a small town on the West bank of the river Nile. It was the capital of the 6th Nome (Pharaonic province) of Upper Egypt.
The archaeological site, here depicted in the background, covers approximately 40,000 square meters and is delimited by a mud brick wall.
The Temple of Hathor, also known as Temple of Tentyra, is the main Temple of the Ptolemaic complex. Dendera was the main centre for the cult of Hathor, goddess of love, joy and beauty, and is nowadays considered one of the best preserved temples in Egypt.
