Decorated in the Kenjo Imari style in iron-red, green, yellow, aubergine, black enamels and gilt on underglaze blue with panels of squirrels, plum blossoms and peonies

Specialist note

For a similar pair in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, c.1517, 1518-1910, Salting bequest, see Oriental Ceramic Society, Porcelain for Palaces: The Fashion for Japan in Europe, 1650-1750 (London, 1990), p. 215. This pair was formally at Blenheim Palace and included in the Duke of Marlborough's sale at Christie's on 9th August, 1886. The catalogue mentions a further pair and it is possible that this example may be one of those.
