Signed Bishu Osafune [No] Ju Yokoyama Sukekane saku, Tomonari Gojuhachi Dai Mago, and Oju Gannen Nigatsu, Edo Period (19th century)
Sugata [configuration]: hon-zukuri, iori-mune, slight
koshizori curve, chu-gissaki
Kitae [forging pattern]: tight ko-itame, fine ji-nie masame on shinogi-ji
Hamon [tempering pattern]: rounded gunome with gunome choji in groups of three
Boshi [tip]: slight notare-komi then suguha and ko-maru
Nakago [tang]: ubu, one mekugi-ana, katte-sagari file marks, sharp ha-agari kurijiri
Habaki [collar]: single copper
Nagasa [length of blade]: 70.5cm.
Koshirae [mounting]: in shirasaya

Specialist note

Sukekane, first known as Toshiyoshi, and later signing Toshizaemon, was the adopted son of Yokoyama Sukemori. Most of his works date from around 1860, just before the Meiji Restoration. Like other Yokoyama smiths his hamon [temper lines] recall the Ishido and earlier Bizen styles reminiscent of Ichimonji work.
