A PORCELAIN EASTER EGG
BY THE IMPERIAL PORCELAIN FACTORY, ST PETERSBURG, CIRCA 1820
Ovoid, centring an oval cartouche painted in purple grisaille with the Resurrection scene within gilt scroll-edged rim, the reverse with similar cartouche painted with the Cup of Salvation depicting the Holy Ghost in the form of a dove above the chalice, on pale turquoise ground, gilt aperture, unmarked
3¼ in. (8.2 cm.) high

Specialist note

The egg is rare for its use of monochrome printing that was introduced to the factory in 1814. There are only four other known examples of this egg. Two are held at the State Hermitage Museum, one is in the Russian Museum, and the fourth is in a private collection.
