Rectangular, the hinged cover centring an en plein enamel plaque depicting A Knight at the Crossroads after Victor Vasnetsov, enamelled overall with floral and geometric motifs in shades of blue, green and white, on a brown ground, within wirework borders, marked under base and inside cover
2½ in. (6.4 cm.) wide

Specialist note

A Knight at the Crossroads was commissioned by Savva Mamontov and completed by the epic painter Viktor Vasnetsov (1848-1926) in 1882. The painting, now at the State Russian Museum in St Petersburg, depicts a mounted bogatyr gazing at a rock engraved with the words 'If you go straight ahead, there will be no life; there is no way forward for he who travels past, walks past or flies past.'
