Specialist note
The present work depicts Potter's Wharf in Noank, Connecticut, a neighboring village to Old Lyme where the Lyme Art Colony was founded. Guy Carleton Wiggins, an active member of the celebrated society of American Impressionists, found inspiration in the docks of the quaint harbor town of Noank and painted it on a number of occasions. Indeed, at the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts inaugural exhibition in 1910, Wiggins showed Building the Ship, Noank, and in the following year another scene of the village.
