The cover, sides and base finely chased with a landscape, a marine trophy, and flowers, marked inside base and on bezel, with charge and discharge of Jacques Cottin and Louis Gervais; also with later French control marks

Specialist note

The design of this snuffbox relates closely to lead plaquettes made as models for gold snuffboxes attributed to Juste-Aurèle Meissonnier. Several surviving gold snuffboxes made to these designs are marked by the Royal goldsmith Daniel Gouers (d. 1754), and it is possible that this box was made in the same workshop. (see Peter Fuhring, Juste-Aurèle Meissonnier, 1999, figs. 19-24, pp.188-190.)
