Vicente de Rego Monteiro (1899-1970)

Habitué de la Grande Chaumière, ce peintre, sculpteur et illustrateur brésilien arriva en France accompagné de sa famille en 1911. Il participa au Salon des Indépendants et fréquenta Modigliani, Léger, Braque, Gleizes, Metzinger et d'autres artistes d'avant-garde. Ses débuts artistiques en France dans le milieu cubiste furent rapides et prometteurs, mais il dut retourner avec sa famille à Rio de Janeiro au déclenchement de la première guerre mondiale. Il contribua à introduire au Brésil l'avant-garde artistique française et connut un succès important dans son pays comme peintre mais aussi comme poète.



A regular of the Grande Chaumiere, this Brazilian painter, sculptor and illustrator arrived in France with his family in 1911. He participated in the Salon des Indépendants, and befriended Modigliani, Léger, Braque, Gleizes, Metzinger and other avant-garde artists. His artistic beginnings in France in the cubist milieu were promising, but he had to return to Rio de Janeiro with his family at the outbreak of the first world war. He helped introduce in Brazil the vanguard of French painting and was largely successful in his country as a painter but also as a poet.
