Les Anémones comprises Chagall's favored imagery--an imaginative landscape dominated by an outsized bouquet, a rooster and angelic figure floating overhead, fish and rustic village--set in the rich blue tonality employed by the artist during this period: "the eternal, transcendental blue reveals man's eternal longing for peace, security, eternity. It proceeds to the metaphysical realm where faith endows images with redeeming power" (R. Doschka, Marc Chagall zum 11. Geburtstag, exh. cat., Stadthalle Balingen, 1986, p. 40).
The present painting was executed shortly after Chagall moved to Vence, an elegant medieval town on the Côte d'Azur which emerged as an artistic center following the Second World War. His new residence, "Les Collines," where he lived until 1966, was situated on the slope of the Baou des Blancs. In these years, "the light, the vegetation, the rhythm of life all contributed to the rise of a more relaxed, airy sensuous style in which the magic of color dominates more and more with the passing of the years. At Vence we witnessed the daily miracle of growth and blossoming in the mild, strong all-pervading light--an experience in which earth and matter had their place" (F. Meyer, Marc Chagall, London, 1964, p. 519).
