Specialist note

Mark Cohen occupies a conspicuous place among the innovators of American street photography. Cohen's photographs are intrusive, fragmented, keyhole perspectives depicting the street-life of his hometown, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Taken in the 1970s and 1980s, the images in True Color reveal chaotic visual narratives that signify the artist's invasive style and adeptly illustrate the coal-mining region. The rich, distinct palette of the 1970s and 1980s, as well as the subject matter make this a remarkable testament to one of the era's most intense photographers.
