Each with rectangular top above a pair of paneled cupboard doors, the sides with carrying handles, each with three adjustable shelves, the locks stamped J BRAMAH/PATENT beneath a crown, one with white chalk inscription ...Ex Clifton/4/12/61 and a paper label inscribed No 288 and JJ Burn, the other with white chalk inscription 238/2 Oaks and ZB66, the shelves later, later mounted

Specialist note

These handsome cabinets represent the fashion for furniture in the style of the ancien régime produced in the early 19th century in England and promoted by cabinetmakers such as S. Jamar. The confident French Empire style of numerous stamped examples of Jamar's work suggest he may have been trained, if not brought up, on the Continent (C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture, Leeds, 1996, p.35).
