Specialist note

Like her father Guglielmo and her brother Beppe, Emma Ciardi took up painting at an early age. She is best remembered for her Impressionistic views of her native Italy as well as 18th Century genre scenes, as exemplified by The Sedan Chair. By the time Ciardi painted the present lot, she had already achieved recognition for her work at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris, the Esposizione Internazionale d'Arte di Venezia as well as in the United States where she was represented by the Howard Young Gallery in New York.
