First included in Apian's Cosmographia in 1544, this small cordiform world map was reportedly based on a larger, now lost map by Fries. It is noticeable that North America, labelled 'Baccalearum' in reference to the cod fishing, has shrunk to a slender peninsula. The one river to be marked is the Nile, leaving the map dominated by the winds and deities which fill its borders. Shirley 96.
