Published in Vanity Fair on 14 February 1901, the present watercolour depicts the 3rd Lord Raglan as Under-Secretary for War, a position he filled from 1900 to 1902. From 1902 to 1919 he served as Lieutenant Governor of the Isle of Man. Son of Richard Somerset, 2nd Baron Raglan, by his first wife Lady Georgina Lygon, third daughter of Henry Lygon, 4th Earl Beauchamp, he was a godchild of King George V of Hanover and became a Page of Honour to Queen Victoria in 1868, which he remained until 1874. Lord Raglan married Lady Ethel Jemima Ponsonby, daughter of Walter Ponsonby, 7th Earl of Bessborough, on 28 February 1883. They had six children.
