Specialist note

Executed during during his prolonged hospitalisation at the end of the war, this portrait of his doctor, Antonin Gosset, is the artist's last sculpture. Parting from the first life-like rendering with moustache of the same year (see Pompidou no. 52), the sculptor reduces the head to its two essential forms and dominant eye sockets. The haunting image is made more so when displayed as intended, hanging from the crown of the head.
