By repute, a gift of the artist to R. Gower, Bryanston Square,
purchased by Olive Guthrie of Torosay Castle in 1915,
and by decent to the present owner.

Specialist note

The composition of the present lot relates to two of Landseer's most well-known works, The Stag at Bay (c. 1846, oil on canvas, 183 x 274.3, Dublin Castle, on loan from the Guinness family) and The Monarch of the Glen (c. 1851, oil on canvas, 163.8 x 168.9, The National Museum of Scotland).
